Our sailing courses are designed to develop young peoples skills in a fun and enjoyable way, whilst following the RYA Youth Sailors Scheme. Under the guidance of a qualified instructor children will gradually be introduced to new skills and techniques with the aim of develop their confidence in and understanding of the sport.
Instruction takes place on the beautiful Exe with safety boats always in attendance and a maximum ratio of 6 students to 1 instructor. On completion of each stage the appropriate certificate will be issued free of charge, logbooks can be purchased through our shop (one off payment) and all completed sections will be signed by your instructor.
RYA certificates are a significant achievement;Instructors sign off each skill as it is completed and once the stage has been achieved the certificate can be used in other areas of study, or activities such as PE at school and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
The Youth Scheme is usually completed in small dinghies suitable for the young sailors size and consists of Stages 1-4.
RYA STAGE 1
Provides a basic understanding of how a boat sails with some experience of steering and handling the boat by sailing across the wind between 2 points. It also covers some safety aspects.
RYA STAGE 2
Develops a range of sailing skills and background knowledge leading on to becoming a confident small boat sailor. Including more points of sail, tacking, controlling boat speed, relevant knots and some more theoretical aspects of sailing small boats
RYA STAGE 3
Teaches sailing in all directions, rigging, launching, basic manoeuvres of coming alongside, picking up moorings and man over board. This course is equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme.
RYA STAGE 4
Like Stage 3, however stage 4 concentrates on the skills required to sail a double-handed boat as a crew or helm as well as solving a variety of problems afloat.
You can learn to sail well very quickly provided the equipment is right for you.
